Determining the Learning Outcomes

Determining the Learning Outcomes

Well-developed learning outcomes are participant-oriented, use action verbs, and are observable and measurable. One method for writing learning outcomes is the ABC model:

  • By the end of this (antecedent), participants will be able to (action verb)  (behaviour) when (criterion).
    • Antecedent: the learning activity, e.g., module, unit, activity, etc.
    • Behaviour: the skill or knowledge being demonstrated
    • Criterion: the degree of acceptable performance
  • For example: By the end of this session (antecedent), participants will be able to list (action verb) the six critical steps (behaviour) when developing education events for adult learners (criterion).
