Mechanical Engineering, Renewable Energy and Building Technology

Kenya

2017 - 2021

Funded by Colleges and Institutes Canada.
Humber College leads a consortium of Canadian partners: Durham College, Vancouver Island University, Selkirk College and Kenyan partners: Kisumu National Polytechnic, Kisii National Polytechnic and Sigalagala National Polytechnic.

Project Goal:

To equip Kenyan youth with the skills and qualifications required to compete in the country’s workforce and support the country’s vision of transforming to a middle income country by 2030.

Project Purpose:

To harness the capacity of Kenya polytechnics to develop industry-responsive skills training programs in mechanical engineering, renewable energy and building technology to produce market-driven graduates.

Description:

This project leverages the model of polytechnic education at Humber and other Canadian Institutions to strengthen the education systems at three Kenyan National Polytechnics. As Kenya's Ministry of Education shifts from a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system (teacher-centered) to a competency-based education and training (CBET) approach (student-centered), there is an opportunity to introduce new teaching techniques, curriculum, lesson plans, and assessment tools that center around work-integrated learning. Through skills training in these areas, strengthened collaboration with industry players and technical support from subject matter experts, our Kenyan partners will be empowered to develop and deliver their own curriculum and develop institutional-wide policies across the campus to support a positive culture of CBET.
