Innovation in Entrepreneurship and Employment

February 7-10, 2017

International Development Week (IDW) is an annual national initiative to encourage Canadians—especially youth—to learn more about and contribute to international development.

As global citizens, this is an opportunity for the Humber community to share their experiences and ideas on ways to reduce poverty around the world, and bring attention to both global and local initiatives that are sparking change.

IDW 2017 is full of thought provoking workshops, panel discussions, guest speakers, and a month long photo exhibit in February. This year our theme is ‘Developing the World’s Youth: Innovation in Entrepreneurship and Employment’.

This event highlights two international programs that focus on youth entrepreneurship for young people growing up in poverty. Through a month long photo exhibit, we will be showcasing Humber’s Sulawesi Economic Development Strategy, a Global Affairs Canada funded project that is advancing entrepreneurship in Universities in Indonesia, as well as Save the Children’s Youth in Action Program that supports out-of-school rural African youth to develop their foundational and entrepreneurial skills and explore livelihood opportunities

From February 7th through to the 10th a series of interactive workshops and panel discussions will be taking place, where students, faculty, community leaders and the general public can learn how Canada and Canadians are making a difference around the world.

Global unemployment is climbing at an alarming rate. Today over 46% of the world workforce faces high levels of precarious work with limited access to basic social protection. Youth, who make up a roughly quarter of the world’s people, are particularly vulnerable.

Join the conversation and help us answer the questions: “What would you do if you couldn’t find a job?” and “What innovative ideas can offer sustainable livelihoods for vulnerable populations/youth?”
